Frequently Asked Questions
A word of introduction:
Many people are reluctant to buy textile art because they don't know how to care for it.
In fact, that’s the number one concern in 90% of purchase inquiries!
Right at the start of the FAQ, you'll learn why working with felt paintings isn't rocket science.
So you can make your decisions with peace of mind.

Caring for wool paintings is no more difficult than caring for other works of art—there are some basic principles that apply regardless of the medium.
Is a wool painting sensitive to light?
As a general rule, all works of art should be hung in a place protected from direct sunlight!
Felt is an organic material. A slight change in color over the years cannot therefore be entirely ruled out and does not constitute grounds for a return. It does not detract from the piece; on the contrary, it highlights its natural character.
However, most of the dyed fibers I use are very lightfast—many pieces have lost none of their color quality even after 10 years in unfavorable locations.
How should I clean a wool painting?
Felt is naturally dust- and dirt-repellent.
However, as with any work of art, dust can accumulate on the surface of an unprotected wool painting over time, especially if it has a more textured surface. It can be easily removed using one of these 3 methods:
- Gently tap the surface (this is usually sufficient)
- Use a feather duster
- Use a vacuum cleaner (rarely necessary).
For this method, place a piece of loosely woven fabric (e.g., gauze) over the surface of the artwork and very carefully run a suitable attachment (without a brush) at the vacuum cleaner’s lowest setting over the fabric.
Be sure to test a corner first to make sure the suction isn’t too strong. For stubborn stains or dirt, please contact a professional dry cleaning service.
Are wool paintings susceptible to moth damage?
It’s happened to most of us at some point—the weather gets cooler, we pull our favorite wool sweater out of the closet, and realize it’s been eaten.
The good news: Pictures aren't stored in a closet; they're hung on the wall.
Once the issue of UV protection has been resolved (see " Light Protection" above), the light is actually a good thing, because moths avoid it and therefore won't be a problem.
In addition, Whisperwool products are moth-resistant.
If you want to be absolutely sure, use a very small amount of eco-friendly moth spray every few months, spraying from a distance.
Each shipment includes a sample piece of felt so you can test the selected product first.
Is it okay to touch a wool painting?
Hands off? Not when it comes to my work!
Felt naturally invites you to touch it—the warm wool and the fascinating surface textures delight people of all ages.
That might be one of the reasons why you’ve fallen in love with your new work of art.Feel free to explore the image with your fingertips. Close your eyes for a moment and enjoy the experience.
But please don't forget that this isn't a practical item.
Still, caution is advised!
Even the cleanest hands leave behind traces of natural oils, and over time these can build up on the movement.
Very important:
Children love my artwork and are often magically drawn to it.
Of course, they can and should touch it with their hands— but a work of art is still not a child’s toy! -

As someone with allergies, do I need to be careful around wool paintings?
It’s important to me that you simply enjoy my art. That’s why I want to be transparent with you about any potential allergens.
Animal companions: Three cats keep me company in my studio. Even though I take great care to keep things clean and keep their curious noses away from the finished pieces, there may still be trace amounts of allergens on the artworks. If you have a severe reaction to cats, please be aware of this.
About the wool: I use high-quality sheep’s wool in my paintings. Depending on the type and processing, the wool may contain a natural residue of lanolin (wool wax), which can cause a contact allergy in some people.
If you have any concerns or specific questions about a particular artwork, please feel free to contact me at any time. Together, we’re sure to find a good solution.
