“Breaking Grid” moves along the boundary between order and chaos. Fragments of a portrait seem to dissolve and reassemble at the same time. The work tells a story of transformation—of that fine line where the familiar shatters and something unexpected can emerge.

The story behind the work
Some paintings refuse to be finished.
“Breaking Grid” began as a portrait titled “Glühwürmchenkosmos.” For years, it waited to be completed—but something about it just didn’t feel right.
As I was exploring the theme of “Order and Chaos,” it suddenly became clear what I had to do: I took a deep breath and cut up the nearly finished wool painting.
From this moment of chaos, a new composition emerged quite naturally. The left half of the image still retains fragments of the original order. Toward the right, the portrait gradually dissolves. Shapes shift, and the grid loses its control.
To me, the work has retained its cosmic quality. It evokes stars and nebulae—those places where dissolution and creation are inextricably linked.
