Wool paintings on a special canvas

Part of my wool paintings are created on Acoustic Panels made of sheep's wool.

Under the registered trademark FeltartNextGen®, I combine my wool painting with Whisperwool® – a dimensionally stable, lightweight substrate originally developed for room acoustics.

For my artistic work, its textile texture is of primary interest: the surface harmonizes with wool and felt, can be colored, and allows for a frameless, lightweight presentation on the wall.

Thus, the acoustic panel does not become a technical addition, but rather part of the artwork.

What is " Whisperwool"?

Whisperwool® is an acoustic element made of sheep's wool developed in Austria. The manufacturer uses wool from Tyrolean mountain and stone sheep, among others, and processes it into dimensionally stable panels.¹

Originally, these panels were developed for interior design. In my works, they take on an additional function: they become the substrate for contemporary wool painting.

Why do I use Acoustic Panels?

I am interested in the material not because of a technical promise, but because of its special properties.
The panel is lightweight and dimensionally stable, consists of wool itself, and can be matched in size and color to the respective work. Felt and picture support thus form a cohesive design unit.
Depending on the motif, the panel can remain visible or be incorporated almost entirely into the composition. This very combination of painting, textile, and unusual substrate opens up additional creative possibilities for me.

And what about the acoustics?

Whisperwool® was developed as an acoustic product and as such possesses sound-absorbing properties. In my FeltartNextGen® works, however, the panel is artistically modified and partially covered with felt and other materials.
The acoustic performance of the finished artwork has not been specifically tested. Therefore, I do not promote my works as acoustic elements, but rather as artworks on an unusual substrate originally developed for room acoustics.

Did you know?

Sheep's wool can

  • absorb and release water vapor,

  • bind certain volatile substances such as formaldehyde

  • and—when processed accordingly—absorb sound.

  • At the same time, it is naturally flame retardant.

Properties that my artworks do not necessarily need to provide, but which demonstrate how unusual the material is that I work with.
